Brazil
EMBARQ’s support to the cities of Brazil is starting with the set up of the Center for Sustainable Transport of Brazil (CTS-Brazil), a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization based in Porto Alegre. The mission of CTS-Brazil is to facilitate and implement sustainable transport solutions – taking into account the economic, social, and environmental factors – in order to improve the mobility and quality of life in Brazilian cities. EMBARQ and CTS-Brazil will be supporting the City of Porto Alegre with their transportation objectives, moving rapidly towards sustainable solutions.

China
Being the nation with the most rapid private motorization rates and the fastest growing economy, China urgently calls for innovative transport solutions that will minimize its demand for foreign energy and will avoid the levels of pollution and congestion seen in many parts of the world. EMBARQ’s participation with the People’s Republic of China takes two forms with two separate partnerships in Shanghai and Xi’an. EMBARQ is also exploring other partnerships with other cities in China.

India
Pune, India is one of the three city members in the Partnership for Sustainable Urban Transport in Asia (PSUTA). With a population of 3.8 million and a vehicle distribution 54.85% 2-wheeler vehicles, Pune’s greatest challenge has clearly, and visibly, become air pollution attributed in great part to two-wheelers and other two-stroke engines.

Mexico
Mexico is home to EMBARQ’s first strategic partnership formed in 2002 between EMBARQ and the Mexico City authorities. The partnership led to the launch of the Center for Sustainable Transport (CTS-Mexico) to address the problems of congestion, air pollution, and transport safety in Mexico City. In June 2005, CTS and the city proudly launched the Metrobus Bus Rapid Transit system, which runs for 14 km along Insurgentes Avenue, a major city center thoroughfare. One year later, Metrobus has served more than 70 million passengers and cut transit time along its route from two hours to one. Today, CTS-Mexico and EMBARQ have expanded their activities into other Mexican cities: Queretaro, Leon de Guanajuato, and two Mexico City suburbs in the State of Mexico, Toluca and Cuautitlan.

PSUTA
The Partnership for Sustainable Transport in Asia (PSUTA) is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute’s (WRI) Center for Transport and the Environment. This partnership is also a part of the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities (http://cleanair.org/caiasia) and was created in early 2004.

Turkey
Istanbul stands literally at the cross roads of Asia and Europe, both by land, and by sea (through the Bosporus). With approximately 170 cars per 1000 people, Istanbul is not as motorized as typical European cities but still lies on par with Mexico City. EMBARQ initiated its involvement with the city of Istanbul in the summer of 2004 with the participation of a Turkish business/transport analyst and in-kind support from the Ford Motor Company.

Vietnam
Hanoi has generated the interests of international aid that will rebuild the traditional bus system, tram construction, and expansion of the bus system into a BRT system. Hanoi is one of the three city members in the Partnership for Sustainable Urban Transport in Asia (PSUTA).
